Background

The Alan Chan Jazz Orchestra (ACJO) launched an exciting recording project this April. Nine of my original big band compositions were recorded at the Bridge Recording Studio in Los Angeles.

With 27 musicians, an engineer and consultants, we used over 40 microphones and recorded 60 minutes of music in 2 days!

My Music

Writing for big band, to me, is a journey of discovery. Every piece starts from a quest to create music that brings people together. Especially in jazz, every musician’s energy and voice can be heard through improvisation. It has become a vital part of my musical expression – inseparable!

Some of the pieces in this album are the result of collaboration with artists Emily Mast and Elaine Cohen, blending our unique experiences together.

From EP to the full album

In September of this year, we will release a limited edition EP titled Rancho Calaveras, with the full album completing by the end of this year.

Postproduction

Sound engineer Rich Breen, who has dozens of Grammy Award®-winning or nominated records, will be mixing and mastering the CDs. The cover will be designed by New York-based Shiman Shan, and Lai Tat Tat Wing from Hong Kong. It will truly be an international production.

Like many independent records in our time, this is a fan-funded project. We finished the recording phase thanks to a generous gift from an anonymous donor. Yet for the post-production, we need to raise $10,000 to pay for at least 70 hours of work for editing, mixing and mastering; as well as graphic design; printing and pressing; new website; promotion campaign, media outreach. So every dollar counts.

iPalpiti Artists International, a 501(c)(3) organization, is creating their first grant for jazz composition to support this project. Your contribution to this grant will be 100% tax-deductible and all of it will be used to fund the project.
